A funny story about this happened to me on the New York City subway. I got on the train to go home from work. I usually read or listen to something educational.
This time I was reading Blair Singer's book "Sales Dogs" and it got these two guys attention. The one asked me what a 'sales dog' was. I had just started the book so I answered based on what I knew from taking a training with Blair. We chatted a little and then he said...that he's not supposed to sell in the subway, so he's not trying to sell to me but showed me a portfolio of shots and magazine articles of him skateboarding. As an entrepreneur, I love to see the entrepreneurial spirit in others. But I am not a skateboarding fan and I am pretty sure I didn't look like one. And unless he was Bam Margera (who I think is hot...shhh don't tell my husband) I wasn't going to buy any skateboarding paraphernalia.
I told him, "I'm not your target market." Then he says of course I am...he target market is intelligent, a few other positive adjectives, etc. I laughed. Then he told me if that was what I was learning from the book, I shouldn't read anymore. (Wow...no one ever got dumber from reading.)
Then his friend went to explain how he sell tons of stuff in NYC which is the toughest market. I don't doubt he has some success. Clearly, he has a portfolio. I mean that sincerely. The attitude, I have a problem with is that because he has had some success...he doesn't need to learn any more. He knows everything and won't listen to anything that is counter from what he thinks he knows.
I thought it was a shame. Here is a successful person...who potentially could achieve much greater success if he was willing to learn more.
If you're not growing...your dying. Continue to grow!
